Creative direction for The New York Times Opinion Democratic and Republican convention coverage

Process

Designed for ease-of-use and flexibility, this visual art system was composed of treated black and white photographs (many of which were live broadcast screenshots), a 3:2 grid, two color palettes, and bold graphic elements that included stars, stripes, and ‘checkerboard’ squares.

As a result, these Opinion stories were able to not only distinguish themselves from the competing New York Times newsroom coverage of the conventions, but also completely dominate readership metrics both within The New York Times and beyond.
